What Is Skin Graft Surgery?
Skin grafting, or skin transplant, takes healthy skin from one area of your body (the “donor site”) and moves it to an injured area to repair a wound. Board-certified plastic surgeon Benjamin Eskra, MD, usually takes healthy skin from an area of the body that your clothes hide, so most people will not see the scar.
Do I Need a Skin Graft?
During your free initial consultation, Dr. Eskra will help you determine whether you’d benefit from skin grafting. You may receive a skin graft during another skin procedure, such as:
- Lesion removal
- Scar revision
- Skin cancer removal
Your skin graft may take only the first two layers of skin (epidermis and dermis). Depending on your needs, it may take some muscle tissue as well.
A dressing or stitches will hold your skin graft in place. Follow Dr. Eskra’s instructions and take special care for several weeks to avoid injuring the transplant site.
On your donor site, you’ll need to wear a dressing for a few days. This site should heal within two weeks, and the skin will grow back.
